NRG Acoustics SG-4: Surround sound

NRG Acoustics SG-4: Surround sound

Multichannel audio is a way of enriching the sound processing superior quality of any audio source with additional audio channels from speakers that surround the audience (surround channels), providing sound from a 360 radius within the horizontal plane (2D) compared to "screen channels" (middle, [front] left, and [front] right) originating only from the listener's frontward arc.

Multichannel audio is portrayed by a listener position or sweet spot where audio effects are the most effective, and offers a fixed or forward perspective of the sound area towards the listener as of this location. The technique enhances the notion of sound spatialization by manipulating sound localization; a listener's ability to get the location or origin of a detected sound in route and distance. This typically is achieved with the help of multiple discrete audio channels routed to an array of loudspeakers.

There are various multi channel audio based types and techniques, varying in reproduction and saving techniques along with the number and placing more channels.

Though cinema and soundtracks represent the major uses of surround approaches, its scope of application is larger than that as surround sound enables creation of an audio-environment for all variations of purposes. Multichannel surround sound techniques may be used to recreate contents as varied as music, conversation, natural or synthetic sounds for cinema, television, broadcasting, or pc systems. Relating to music content one example is, an active performance can make use of multichannel approaches to the context connected with an open-air concert, of an musical theatre or even for broadcasting; for a film specific techniques are tailored to movie theatre, or to residence (e.g. home cinema systems).

The narrative space is also a content which could be enhanced through multichannel techniques. This applies mainly to cinema narratives, for example, the dialog from the characters of a film, but might even be utilized on plays for theatre, to a conference, or to integrate voice-based comments in an archeological site or monument. Such as, an exhibit might well be improved with topical ambient sound of water, birds, train or equipment sound. Applicable natural sounds can also be used in educative programs.

In these applications, the content would typically be artificial noise maded by the computer device in interaction with its user. Substantial work has been specifically done using multichannel for enhanced situation awareness in government and public safety applications.
